ST OUEN, JERSEY

|

Project: Contemporary Extensions and Refurbishment
Location: Jersey, Channel Islands
Completed: 2013 - Present

Constructed in 2007, this house sits on a prominent site in the west of the island with stunning views of the other Channel Islands.

Layzell Architects were appointed to re-design the layout and appearance to create a home that better suited the lifestyle of the client and made more of the spectacular site.

One key challenge was the building's orientation. With its main elevation facing south west, the house made limited use of the southern sun and stunning views to the north west.

An iridescent tile discovered in Spain by the client was a catalyst to the development of the design. The tile adorns a 'spine' wall, reflecting the surrounding views into the house while blurring the boundaries between inside and out. Light is bounced through new, minimal floor to ceiling glass sliding doors and a new balcony has been introduced to create a more coherent and balanced aesthetic.

New materials such as granite and timber have been used to soften the building and ground it within the site. Granite-filled gabions replace the white-rendered boundary walls to create bookmarks at each end of the building while providing a modern reference to the island's heritage.

Planning consent was granted in June 2015 and construction is soon to begin.
